Abstract

Film serves not only as a medium of entertainment but also as a representation of characters' psychological conditions through the dialogues constructed within the narrative. This study aims to describe the manifestation of optimism in the illocutionary speech acts of the characters in AR-RIḤLAH (THE JOURNEY) by integrating pragmatic and positive psychology perspectives. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The data consisted of the characters' dialogues in AR-RIḤLAH (THE JOURNEY) containing illocutionary speech acts that indicate manifestations of optimism. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed by classifying speech acts based on Searle's theory of illocutionary acts, identifying the accompanying psychological states, and interpreting the manifestations of optimism using Martin Seligman's theory of learned optimism, particularly the dimensions of permanence, pervasiveness, and personalization. The findings reveal that optimism is primarily manifested through assertive and directive speech acts. Assertive speech acts are employed to construct positive beliefs, reinterpret negative experiences, and sustain hope for favorable outcomes. Meanwhile, directive speech acts function to foster courage, reduce fear, direct actions, and transmit optimism to interlocutors through commands, prohibitions, advice, and encouragement. The findings further demonstrate that illocutionary speech acts function not only as communicative actions but also as linguistic media that represent the speaker's psychological state. This study contributes to the development of pragmatic studies by integrating speech act theory and positive psychology to explain how optimism is represented in film dialogue.
